Wanting to Learn.

Hey, my name is Dave and I have a project to do in class and my teacher told me to create a video game for iPhone or whatever. I've been doing a little research and it seems a good program is XCode 4. Now, creating video games is my passion and I have never built a game through extensive coding. To reveal a little bit of my game I'm going to start making (once I get a Mac), is a 2D Side Scroll Action Game. So I have no idea on how to code a 2D Side Scroll but like the subject implies, I'm willing to learn this stuff. Can anyone give me a few pointers, advice, and/or guildlines to help me creating the things I enjoy?
