I am over my budget, but am solely determined to learn Objective C.  I have a used MacBook Pro Intel Core Duo on MacOS 10.6.8.  I downloaded Xcode 4.2 successfully and it seems to work. Until... I try to run any simple program.  After a successful build, hitting Run I get a drop down note:

Xcode cannot run using the selected destination.
Choose a destination with a supported architecture in order to run on this system.

I follow the Apple tutorial, several book tutorials and nothing.  I am beside myself.  I never ask questions until I exhaust myself trying to figure it out, but this on has me beside myself.  You guys are the best on the net.  PLEASE, PLEASE help me.

All I want to do right now is simple C and Objective C programs so I can learn.

Is your MacBook Pro 32 or 64 bit?

I have a feeling it may be 32 bit, and this would mean that you need to make changes within your project in Xcode.

I am not 100% sure what changes you will need to make, however as a start, I suggest you change the Architectures from 64 to 32-bit intel.  This can be found in the Build Settings part of your project.

I hope this helps,
Nick

My core duo is 32 bit and you hit the nail on the head. Searching through Xcode I found the architecture settings and they default to 64 bit. Resetting to 32/64 native or platform default fixed the problem and everything works.  Thank you for your insight.

In my experience, every major programming problem I've had, the answer was somewhere right under my nose.  In this case the word 'architecture' in the error note was it.  How could I miss such an obvious sign?  Well, programming does humble us every day.

As an after thought, this is my first experience with Xcode 4.xx.  Is it me or is Xcode becoming too helpful? I'm having fewer problems with my programming skills than I am with the Xcode environment. Learning Xcode, its settings and its nuances, has become my biggest hurdle. Does anyone else think this?
