How do we pronounce it when reading the string?

"Percentage" sounds pretty ungeeky. Surely there is a way of "saying" it by now, like everything else in programmingland?

:-)

It's pronounced "percent".  Still geeky though!   Grin

I never thought about it until you mentioned it, now that I do think about it... It does seem odd to pronounce it as "percent" when reading a program. I read the @ as "at sign" but I was wondering who reads it as Asperand?

Hmmm, doesn't sound geeky enough to me but I guess it will have to do, if The Master sez so ;-)

Like the ! is pronounced "bang" sometimes. Not "Exclamation Mark".

. is dot

# is pound

etc.

I think of $ as "string" but many folks pronounce it "dollar sign" I think.

I think, personally, I might think of % as "format" such as "format f" or "format g" etc...

* is "star" for example (shorter than saying "asterisk", for pointers)

but what about & ... (the plot thickens!)

i'm pretty sure it can also be pronounced as "modulo". but in all fairness, "percent" will be a lot more understandable and well-known

When used as an operator, as in a % b you would read that as "a mod b" or "a modulus b".  But you wouldn't read it that way when used for formatting.  So %f would be read as "percent f."

Cheers,

Steve

well, here (in India) student & professionals read %i as ( percentile i ). dont know which is the right word, but it doesnt matter what you pronounce as far as you write right code.

# is called as "hash" instead of "pound"
