I have been an Apple fan for a few years now, and this year would probably be one of the better times I could go just to be there.  Though, the cost is a bit steep just for the experience of going.

I would expect to be through the book and somewhere in Aaron Hillegass' book by the time it rolled around.  Would I get anything out of the workshops at that point, or would I still be too green for it to make sense?

How likely is one to get into the keynote (where pain/suffering/wait is not that much of an issue)?

First, it does cost a lot of money to attend.   Depending on where you're coming from, that obviously can include air fare, hotel, and meals in addition to the conference costs.

There are lots of sessions; I found the sessions and workshops to be okay, but not spectacular.  They try to cover a lot of ground in a relatively short amount of time.  Much of the benefit of this conference (as with many conferences) is networking opportunities with other people.

I think it all depends on your goals and what you're looking to get out of this.  Apple has made previous WWDC sessions available for purchase:  http://developer.apple.com/products/videos.html.   A "track"  (for WWDC 2008: iPhone, Mac, or IT) costs $499 and all three tracks cost $999.    If you're interested in just one track and don't need the networking opportunities, this can be a reasonable (although still not cheap) alternative.  The tracks are posted some time after WWDC (don't recall how long that takes), so you'll have to wait until they're available for purchase.

As for attending the keynote, I think a lot will depend on whether Steve Jobs is returning to speak.  I think you'll have to wait a bit no matter what, but if he is returning I have a feeling the wait will be extremely long.

Hope this helps.  I hope other previous WWDC attendees will provide some input here as well.

Cheers,

My goal is to attend WWDC 2010. This year just won't work due to conflicts with previous travel plans, and the fact that I'm still in the early learning phase. Maybe for 2010 we can plan a meetup at WWDC for board members! What do you think?

Sure, that's a great idea!  Maybe we'll all have some great apps to discuss by then as well!

Steve, are you still attending next week?  If so, would you be up for meeting us forum folks who are attending?

Wendy,

I'm embarrassed to tell you that I waited too long and got sold out of WWDC, so I won't be attending
