Would it be possible to update the Kindle version with latest correction from 2nd printing?

That's an excellent question, but as far as I know, there's no way to do that.  That's under Amazon's control, and  not mine or the publisher's.  Perhaps you could try to contact someone at customer support and explain that a newer version of the same title (with the same ASIN) was released and you'd like to get it  (if you do try that, let us all know how it works out).

I tried to delete the version (1st printing) I have on my Kindle and re-download the book from Amazon, hoping it would pick up the newer printing.  Unfortunately, it didn't work (it's probably internally stored under a different product number) and I got the same version.

Cheers,

I finally spoke with Kindle second level support about this. He assure me that by deleting the book on the Kindle and downloading it again will always get the latest digital version. Following his instruction, I removed the exiting book and downloaded the book again on my Kindle and iPhone Kindle Reader (April 9, 2009). Unfortunately I wasn't able to get the 2nd print version on both devices.
At that point, the Kindle support told me that he will contact the publisher directly to inquire about the updated version for Kindle.

So it looks like the current Kindle version is still based on 1st print. Can someone confirm this?
Also Steve, do you think you can check if the latest digital version gets pushed to Amazon?

At least on Safari Books Online, I can confirm that the digital version seems to have all of the 2nd print errata correction.

The  current Kindle version is the newer version.   Deleting and restoring the book gives the same printing (the 1st printing), as I had already experimented with that myself.   Go to amazon and get the book sample downloaded to your Kindle.  You'll see that it's the second printing, which has all the corrections.   This is an issue with Amazon and not with the publisher.

Called Amazon Kindle support again and this is what I learned:
- They purchased the book on their Kindle and confirm that current Kindle version is still based on 1st print.
- Amazon only keep one version of the book based on the unique ASIN number.
- Content can only be updated by the publisher and they have no way of knowing if Kindle version is updated. (only publisher and backend software engineers has that information)
- Once publisher uploads new version, Kindle always downloads the latest because they keep only one copy.
- Amazon wants publisher to contact Kindle technical team to work this out if content isn't being updated even though it's been uploaded.

Looks like this is as far as I can go on this subject matter with Amazon. I also asked them about why the sample content being newer but this team didn't have enough tools to look into it.

Steve, can verify that 2nd print is uploaded to Amazon? If so, looks like you need to get in touch with them to work this out since all new purchases are still getting the 1st print version.

Best,

I've asked my publisher to follow-up on this.  I'll keep you posted!

My publisher heard back from the Program Manager of Digital Media at Amazon.  Apparently, you didn't get accurate information the first time around:

The reason he doesn't see the new version of the book has to do with how we keep the purchaser's copy consistent.  In other words, since he bought the earlier version, he will continue to get the earlier version when he downloads the title from the Kindle store.  If he were to refund his copy, and then repurchase the book, he will get the most recent version of the book.  Kindle does that because we want to preserve the reader's bookmarks, reading location information etc.

That behavior is not unexpected.

I'm not sure how a refund would work, since the policy for Kindle content refunds is within 7 days of purchase.  Maybe you could go back to customer support, explain the problem again, and get them exchange your version for the newer one.   Good luck and keep me posted.

Cheers,

Steve
