Welcome to the forum!

Yes, the Kindle app for the iPhone has increased the versatility and usefulness of the Kindle version of the book.  I was also quite pleased with how the Kindle formatting was handled.  Did you look at the Safari Books online web-based app?  I think they do a better job of displaying the program examples, using a constant-width font and horizontal scrolling.  However, the Kindle app provides better navigation capabilities.

It's interesting that two forum members actually purchased the Kindle version of the book without even owning a Kindle and are reading it on their iPhones!

Good luck!

I have used Safari's mobile version, and it is a nice step up from their Bookbag app. I hope they keep increasing the number of books available for mobile formatting.

As for the Kindle, I actually took the plunge and bought a Kindle 2 when it was announced. The first gen Kindle intrigued me, but I resisted. The Kindle 2 solved most of the things I didn't like about the Kindle 1 so I couldn't resist any more. I'm glad I did it. While the Kindle 2 isn't a perfect device, it's definitely the best ebook reader I have owned.

Steven,

This was hard to answer, because I have all 4 versions. I had the ADE version of the first printing. I got the first book, upgraded to the second book. Got both the Kindle and Safari PDF.

You mentioned that you had issue with tables in the Kindle 2 version, and you made reference to another printing? does that mean I would get an updated version, if I downloaded it a second time?

I've been recommending the forum multiple times daily, when I read people asking about ObjC on Twitter. This resource is priceless.

Thank you!

Hi Aaron,

I can see why you had difficulty answering my question!  Smiley

See my recent post (or I'm about to post it in a few minutes) about what I learned from the publisher about the Kindle version and getting the updated printing.

Thanks for passing the word along.  It's a great community that's building here and I couldn't be happier with how everyone is joining to help everybody else along the way.

Cheers,

Steve

An interesting side thought... back when I was in Computer Engineering, one of our profs mentioned that the human brain processes reflected light differently than it does a light source (ie. a page of text vs. a screen full of text). I don't know what his source was for that "fact" but I do know that I can proofread, and debug, much better on paper than I can on a screen.

Anyone able to shed any light on this? (Bad pun fully intended!) Smiley

And for the record, I bought the book, and have already cracked the spine, dog-eared some pages, and highlighted lots of things Cheesy

Here's two places that offer it.  You may want to look around and see if you can find it at a cheaper price, as I  haven't done that.  If you do find it cheaper, please post a reply so that other members can get it at that price as well.

I have both the Kindle version and the printed book. I bought the book because when I'm actually working out the program examples it's much easier to go back a few pages to find something I've forgotten. I bought the Kindle version because I've learned from trying to learn languages in the past that reviewing concepts is very important. So my approach is to first work through the examples in the printed version, then when I have time and I'm not at a computer I pull out the Kindle and read thru the sections again. It's surprising how much more I understand on the second reading!

Since I live overseas in Europe, I cannot buy a Kindle, and certainly can't use it as a wireless device.

That would be up to whatever deals the publisher makes with Apple.  I'm not privy to that, nor do I have any real way to influence that either.

I mentioned this trick on Amazon, but thought I would add it here as well, since we have some dedicated readers...

I bought the Kindle edition, but I sent it to my "Kindle for PC" device instead of the Kindle itself. In this format, the text is extremely cleanly portrayed, and the graphics so far are in color (I know there are not a lot of them, but the ones I have seen are very pretty!). That is something the Kindle cannot do.

And I am lucky enough to have a MacBook Pro running Windows as a Virtual Machine (VM) via Parallels. So I have Windows running on my Mac desktop. Because Kindle for PC doesn't support Mac yet, this allows me to open the book on the left side of my Mac desktop (via the Windows VM) and open XCode on the right side. So I can read the book, try the examples, and do the exercises all in parallel. Very efficient!  The only downside is you cannot copy/paste text from the Kindle version into XCode, but as Steve has pointed out elsewhere, it's probably better to type it in yourself to get a feel for the code and syntax.

It may be of interest to others that there is now a beta version of Kindle for Mac available. Not exactly an incredible reading experience but I suppose they'll improve the app over time.

That being said I've never seen the PC version to know what that's like.

Actually, I agree with you.  And yes, I think it is a generational thing.    Grin
